The first thing you need is to install ibus
so to install ibus open terminal and type
sudo apt-get install ibus
sudo apt-get install ibus-m17n
after installing ibus and m17n go to System->Administration->Language Support in the Gnome menu
Select keyboard input system as ibus
Click on Install/Remove Languages -> Select Tamil -> Select all the Components ->Apply the changes.
Then go to System->Preferences->Keyboard Input Methods
Goto Input Method Tab , Select an Input method and then choose Tamil -> Tamil-phonetic and click Add
Enable Show icon on System tray
then your preferred shortcut keys .
Choose Tamil from the keyboard icon in the notification area
and now you can type தமிழ் (Tamil) !!

Provide us the keyboard layout for tamil-phonetic.
Because if I type “f” and “b” its displaying as English letter instead of tamil characters.

Cheers!
For ibus-m17n phonetic, the following table is more precise than the one from ‘ekalappai’: https://github.com/scim-im/scim-tables/blob/master/tables/ta/Tamil-phonetic.txt.in
How do I type “தமிழ்”?
I did as your post and now when typing “tamil”, I get “டமில்”!
I am using a U.S. keyboard on Linux Mint 17 (Ubuntu 14.04).
Thanks.
I typed “thamiz” and it is correct: “தமிழ்”.
Where can I find a table of conversion between Tamil and roman letters for Tamil phonetic m17n (e.g: th த், mi மி, z ழ்)?
Dear Sir,
I am an ardent user of Phonetic typing in Tamil Language. All these years I was using Windows and Windows related software. Now due to security concerns I have switched to LInux Rafaela 17.2.
I have diligently followed your installation instructions in installing the software application. However in IBus Preferences – Input Method – Tamil -Phonetic (m17n) is not showing up.
Therefore I’m not able to install the package.
Could you help me?
O.R. Krishnarajasekhar.
